One of the greatest gifts of my life was getting to watch my wife fall in love with the Japan I knew.
The first time my wife traveled from rural Texas to Japan, she was amazed by Shibuya Crossing and the crowded trains in Tokyo. But those aren’t the moments that stick with her the most.
She remembers fishing for oysters off the side of a boat and eating them fresh out of the ocean. Making mochi by hand with my aunts and uncles. Following my family onto a local mountain in the spring to dig for bamboo shoots, then bringing them home to prepare and eat them together.
Somewhere along the way, she stopped just seeing Japan as a visitor. She started becoming part of it.
That changed how I thought about travel. Showing someone Japan wasn’t about taking them to the right places. It was about opening the door to the life behind those places.
That’s the Japan I want to share — the Japan I grew up in, the Japan my wife fell in love with, and the Japan I hope you’ll leave feeling connected to long after you go home.
Rio - Founder and Your Host in Japan
Rio’s Japan is a nine-day, small-group journey designed to take you beyond sightseeing and into everyday life in Japan.
We will still visit places worth seeing, but the heart of the journey is walking neighborhoods with locals, sharing meals, and spending time with the people who live and work there.
Nine days won't make you a local. But it is enough time to start noticing the things you might miss on a typical trip - how people work, eat, communicate, and spend time together.
The goal isn’t to come home saying, “I went to Japan.” The goal is to come home feeling like, for a little while, you lived there and made real connections with the people you met along the way.
That’s Rio’s Japan.
The Experiences
Rio’s Japan is built around real relationships with people who live, work, and spend their everyday lives in the places we visit.
These aren’t performances for tourists. They’re chances to stop watching Japan from the outside and take part in it.
Eat, drink, laugh, and talk with Rio's longtime friends who work in Tokyo about the parts of work and life that rarely make it into a guidebook.
Not a salaryman tour. A night out with friends.
Gather around the table in a Japanese home for homemade food, easy conversation, and the comfortable chaos of an evening with family.
Meet the people behind a neighborhood shopping street in Tokyo and maybe spend a little time helping alongside them.
For once, you help welcome the tourists.
Cook simple, everyday dishes with locals. Go home knowing how to make them yourself.
As an extra bonus, participate in the inevitable debate over whose family makes them the “right” way.
Wake up with the island. Help with the morning’s catch, prepare food, and gather around the table with the people who live there.
Hear about both the beauty and the reality of island life.
Don’t just visit the island. Live with its rhythm.
Rio’s Japan is built around moments you can't easily search for or recreate on your own because they begin with people, trust, and relationships.
I don’t just want you to see Japan. Come as Rio's guest.
Leave feeling like you have become part of Japan and Japan has become part of you.
